Week 12: December 2-5

December 6, 2024

The Scouts were led by one of their own this week, as Gabe taught them how to make a variety of Christmas origami decorations. They also made dot paintings, copying the style of Aboriginal art in Australia. The Scouts certainly seemed to be enjoying themselves. At the end of the evening, they were given the badges they'd earned this term and the medals for the shooting competition were awarded. Well done to the winners!

One Scout is demonstrating to the others how to make an origami star.Concentrating hard on their designs, the Scouts are working on dot paintings inspired by Aboriginal art in Australia. One of our Scouts made this gorgeous piece of dot art, of a flower. The Bronze, Silver and Gold medal winners of the group's shooting competition earlier this year look rather pleased. The gold winner is cheekily biting his medal.

The Cubs had a full night on Tuesday, squeezing in all the badgework they could into one evening! They located services on a map of the local area, talked about renewable energy and played a related game, before wrapping the evening up with more games. The Howlers won the firelighting competition this week. Well done!

The Cubs are working together to find where services are located on a local map.A Cub is trying to get her cotton wool lit in order to win the firelighting competition. Her Sixer is giving her tips from behind her shoulder.

Thursday evening, the Beavers got to make simple water filters using cotton wool, sand and gravel. It's always a popular and memorable activity with the young people. It's amazing how the filthy, muddy water turns into crystal clear water, if the Beavers build them right!

This Beaver is following instructions and carefully following the groove as he cuts around the bottle. These Beavers did not follow instructions, and their bottle has been cut wonky, so it's not standing up straight. Oops! One of the Beavers exclaims, "I found a gem!" as she finds a piece of quartz in her gravel she's adding to her water filter. These two Beavers look amazed at the clear water their filter is producing from the filthy water that was poured into it.The water filters did their job to varying degrees of success, one being visibly cloudier and the other end of the row looking really clear.
