Friday night, our Cubs had their Dia de los Muertos themed sleepover. Once they'd set up their beds for the evening, it was time for burritos. It seemed most of the Cubs weren't all that hungry! The activities got underway next, beginning with La Loteria, a Mexican game similar to Bingo. Each Cub had a board, la tabla, with 16 images on it, and a handful of dried pinto beans to mark out the cards called out. The Cubs played three rounds, getting more and more excited as their boards filled up with beans, with the winners shouting "La Loteria!".
Next up, biscuit decorating! Most of the Cubs slathered their skull biscuits in brightly coloured icing and placed rice paper or icing flowers on top, while a few were more careful and artistic in their attempts. Having done so, they devoured all that sweetness and were ready and raring for the next thing, the utter anhilation of the burro piñata...
The leaders wanted to make sure every Cub got a chance to hit the piñata, so it had been carefully constructed to be extra strong. It turns out, that perhaps it was just a smidge over-engineered. Every Cub got multiple hits in, and before the piñata surrendered completely, the body was still clinging on to the head of the burro. They loved it! There was a mad scramble for the sweets inside when they eventually tumbled out.
The Cubs enjoyed their bedtime film, gobbling up their sweets from the piñata and after some chit chat, settled down to sleep. Thankfully they didn't stir until 8am!
In the morning, following breakfast, the Cubs had fun making some paper skulls. The silent concentration was incredible; you could have heard a pin drop while they were all working!
Finally, the Cubs got all their kit packed up, took down their tents and headed home, having had a fantastic sleepover. Who's ready for the next one?
