Week 3: September 23-26

September 27, 2024

The Scouts had one of their favourite activities this week, Taskmaster! As always, the solutions were interesting to see, including watching them trying to hide themselves in the room without opening any of the cupboards, blowing out a candle from the furthest distance and making the highest tower using a potato. This week the Lions won the firelighting race. Well done!

A group of Scouts have made themselves into a tower, standing on a table and are helping one of the Scouts, who is a bit of a climbing monkey, to stay on the built-in cupboard and hold the team's potato in place. They were set a task to make the highest tower using a potato. The remaining Scouts are watching and several Scouts on the other team seem to find this all very funny.A line of Scouts are waving their neckers hard to create a breeze, having been given a task to extinguish a candle from as far away as possible. Some of the Scouts are putting their whole body into the effort.Several Scouts look on as another attempts to get a fire started during the fire lighting race. He's chosen to build his sticks into a log cabin, in the hopes that it helps his fire start quickly.

The Cubs worked on their communication skills by guiding one another blindfolded along a zigzag line. Some had their partner follow the sound of their voice, as they moved along the line backwards, while others gave step-by-step instructions. The Pouncers won the firelighting race, with the Howlers coming in second.

Other Cubs are waiting their turn at the end of the taped line. One Cub is blindfolded and making her way along a taped zigzag line, guided by the voice and instructions of her fellow Cub who has a cheeky grin on his face. In the background, we can see another pair of Cubs finishing their run of the taped line while others wait their turn. One Cub reacts in triumph next to his firebowl, having lit his cotton wool first. The other two competing Cubs are still trying to light theirs using the firesteels, while the remaining Cubs look on.

This week the Beavers had a visit to Canley Fire Station, where they talked with the firefighters about the kinds of situations they get called out for. They got to try on some firefighting gear, had a look at the heat scanner and were giving the cutters a lift when a call came in and the firefighters had to leave immediately! Although it was disappointing to have their visit cut short, it was really cool to see the firetruck drive away with the lights and sirens on as it headed towards the emergency.

A Beaver stands in a pair of fireman's boots which are enormous on her, wearing a fireman's trousers and coat that are equally huge on her. The fireman standing behind her has just put the fireman's helmet on her head, and she has a big cheeky grin on her face. One of the Beavers is wearing a firefighter's breathing apparatus, without the tank. Two firefighters stand next to him, having helped him put on the gear.A Beaver holds a heat scanner, pointing it at the faces of two other Beavers and looking at the difference between how their faces look to their surroundings. One Beaver seems to have a cold nose.A young Beaver in a bright pink puffy jacket tries to lift a fireman's cutter, assisted by a fireman. It looks heavy! Three other Beavers, their leader and a firefighter look on.
